Accessory Decoders

Any accessory on your layout can be controlled digitally. Digital control provides an incredibly reliable and easy way to remotely operate turnouts, signals, lights, motors, etc. with a minimum of wiring. Digital accessory control is also the basis for more advanced layout processes such as route programming and automation.

Most accessories fall into one of two categories, based on how they are operated: momentary or continuous. Items such as turnouts and signals contain solenoids or relays that are activated by supplying a brief, or momentary, connection of their inputs to the power return of your layout. Digital control of these type of accessories requires a decoder with "Pulse" outputs such as the MZE Decoder Z83/84 or Viessmann 5211 or 5231. Accessories that are switched on or off for some length of time are considered continuous accessories and would include lighting, motors, and track circuits. Decoders containing "Switch" outputs must be used to digitally control continuous accessories, and are present on the MZE Decoder Z83/84 and Viessmann 5213. The specific details of each decoder are listed in the product summaries below. For more information on digital decoders and how to use them, please also see our "How-To" articles.

Decoder Z83/84

MZE's own universal accessory decoder for Märklin Digital and Systems. This decoder can be used to control virtually any accessory on your layout including turnouts, signals, lighting, track circuits, etc. The decoder has four accessory channels, each with momentary Pulse and continuous Switch outputs. The decoder outputs may be used in any mode or order necessary to fit your specific application, preventing the need for multiple decoder types. Connections are easily made using standard screw terminals, no special connectors are required. Made in the USA by Modell-Zug Elektronix.

Feedback Decoders

Digital feedback modules quickly become a necessity on larger layouts to simplify control and insure train safety. As trains travel around the layout, feedback modules monitor their locations through track sensors. The feedback information is reported back to the control system, which responds by issuing commands to control trains and accessories.

There are two different types of feedback modules that may be used, depending on the interfaces available in the control system. The MZE Decoder Z88 utilizes the Märklin s88 data format and is suitable for use only with Märklin Digital compatible devices. The Uhlenbrock 63350 communicates over the LocoNet device network common to many DCC equipment manufacturers. However, both modules may also be used with the Uhlenbrock Intellibox. Please see the product descriptions and online manuals below for more information. To learn more about digital feedback modules and how to apply them, please also see our online "How-To" articles.

Decoder Z88

The Decoder Z88 is MZE's feedback module for use with Märklin Digital s88-compatible interfaces. The decoder supplies layout feedback for automated functions through an interface unit such as the Uhlenbrock Intellibox or Märklin Interface, Memory or Central Control-I. The Z88 has 16 detection inputs, which may be activated by circuit tracks, contact tracks, or other connection to digital power ground. Several decoders may be connected to a single interface unit to create a large feedback network. A special data cable (1m length) is supplied with each decoder. Made in the USA by Modell-Zug Elektronix.

The 63350 feedback module is designed for use with other LocoNet devices, including the Intellibox and IB-Switch. The 63350 has 16 detection inputs with many user-definable characteristics accessible through the LocoNet Program feature of the Intellibox. Each input may be freely assigned with a unique address, as well as individual timing delay for status changes. The detection inputs are activated by circuit tracks, contact tracks, or other connection to digital power ground. Several decoders may be connected over LocoNet to form a large feedback network. A 2m LocoNet cable is supplied with each decoder. Made in Germany by Uhlenbrock.
