Signals are by far one of the most interesting
and important aspects of railroading. Their presence on a model railroad
can truly bring your layout operations to life. Just as on the
prototype, signal systems can be used to safely control train movements
on mainlines, at stations and in switching yards. They are also indispensable
on automated layouts to create realistic block operations.
There are two basic classes of railroad signals:
mechanical semaphore signals and color light signals. The type of
signals that are appropriate for your layout depends primarily on the
time period that you are modeling. Mechanical semaphore signals were
common on German railroads up to the 1950's, with many still in use around
stations to this day. Most of them however have been replaced by the modern color light
signals, especially in mainline applications. All of the signals
available from MZE are suitable for use on analog or digital layouts, when used
together with our digital accessory decoders.
Digital layouts with "high-efficiency" locomotives (6090x and mfx) can
also benefit from the additional realism of gradual starts and stops
provided by the MZE Brake Module.
